Second Grade is enjoying soaring through outer space and learning lots about the planets in our solar system.  The students have learned the order of the planets from the sun using a fun mnemonic device that’s easy for them to remember.

My     Mercury
Very    Venus
Excited    Earth
Mother    Mars
Just    Jupiter
Served    Saturn
Us   Uranus
Nachos    Neptune

The students have utilized books in the classroom, books that they’ve read on Epic via the iPads, their “Solar System” booklets, and Google to research specific information about a planet of their own choosing to complete their "All About a Planet" posters.

This is the second anthology story that we have worked on as a whole class and the students really enjoy the flexible grouping that comes from it, especially when they’re partner reading.

Such fun for the Second Graders who were part of the Children’s Chorus of “Frozen, Jr.”.

These kiddos love to have fun! Check out this great pic from HCA’s playground - love those smiles!

Holy Child Academy will be closed Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 27th (as of now) due to the ongoing threat to the community's health due to COVID-19.

Please be aware that more information will come via your email regarding next week's remote learning to be provided for Tuesday, March 17 - Friday, March 20.

Second Grade is leading the prayer at dismissal each day for the month of March.  Most of the students are eager to participate and welcome the opportunity to speak to the entire school.  I am so proud of the students who have read the prayers thus far. They were poised, articulate and confident!

This week, the Second Graders who led the prayer at dismissal were given a prayer to read chosen by Miss Kathol.  However, next week the students will read prayers that they will have written themselves.  Miss Kathol visited our classroom this week to teach the students about the four types of prayers to guide them in writing their own prayers.

HCA students were introduced to competitive cup stacking this week. The students had so much fun! They all exhibited the skills needed to be successful with the activity - focus, concentration and active participation. It was great!

Additional photos and videos can be seen on Mrs. Mossor’s P.E. blog.  Check it out!

The Second Grade enjoyed participating in the school wide celebration of Black History this week.  They did a great job answering trivia questions, guessing song lyrics and getting creative with their drawn versions of iconic photographs.

The students are finding that extra comfort helps them with SSR - Silent Sustained Reading.  They took full advantage of the quiet time (and new comfy pillows) after lunch recess to spend time reading.  Readers read, so it’s so important for Second Graders to have a designated time to simply read to themselves for enjoyment.

HCA re-enrollment deadline is next Friday, March 6!  Please remember to send your registration in by next week.

Happy 100th Day!!!!

We had lots of fun celebrating the 100th day of school in Second Grade!  From 100 piece puzzles to paper clip chains of 100, the students enjoyed a day of counting fun as well as reflecting on the 100 days of school that have passed.

This week HCA celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Day. Each class was designated another class to bestow a random act of kindness upon. Mrs. Devenney’s Nursery 3 class visited Second Grade and showed kindness towards us by sharing a favorite book, A Big Mooncake for Little Star, and snack with us. Everyone was completely enraptured by the sweet book that Mrs. Devenney read.

The Second Grade had the opportunity to spread some kindness as well. The students wrote positive messages on colorful spots and then anonymously placed them on the lockers and classroom door of Third Grade! Then we visited them after lunch recess to read the book A Little Spot of Kindness. All of the Second and Third Graders received a “spot” sticker as a special reminder to choose kindness whenever possible.

Another very special event happened this week - First Reconciliation for Braelynn, Declan and Gabe!  They did a wonderful job reading and singing for the prayer service.  It was so lovely for Alana and Sofia to attend the service to show their support. Lots of smiles all around!

Please remember to RSVP to HCA's Annual Auction!  Hope to see you there!
